The Olive Tree

Olive tree

Of this plant, native to the Near East, we are used to picture its oil, extracted from fruits.

Yet the olive in phytotherapy is useful in all its parts: leaves and bark are used in a good variety of preparations, whose spectrum includes the treatment of fevers, hypertension and hypercholesterolemia, is a valuable ally just to purify the blood and prevent circulatory disorders.

Its extracts are ideal for controlling cholesterol, without negatively affecting Hdl fats, the so-called “good cholesterol” which has instead a protective function for the heart and arteries. Not only: the olive has an important hypotensive function, which is useful for those suffering from high blood pressure ».

It is found in the form of leaves and glycerine macerate: “The leaves are suitable in decoction, while the glyceric macerate, practical to take, should only be diluted in a little water, then drunk”. But also the oil has an important curative function: “The peasant medicine used it to detoxify the liver and in the inflammations of the stomach”.

Thus, by restoring proper function of the digestive tract, the risk of circulating poorly digested foods in the blood is reduced. And olive oil performs its purifying function at its best.

Our ancestors had understood for centuries that the olive leaves hid health properties not indifferent. Today we talk about them in terms of hypotensive, cholesterol-lowering, cardiotonic and anti-inflammatory action, etc.

Citing a verse from the Bible according to Ezekiel (47.12) it says: “Trees grow on the banks of the Jordan who never lose the leaves whose fruits are food and leaves medicine”.

A verse that clearly indicates that the extraordinary active principles of the “tree of life” are concentrated in its leaves while its fruits, olives and oil are an excellent food. For the Jewish people, the olive tree is one of the most precious gifts of God, the very symbol of the Covenant.

The olive has been present in the history of Mediterranean medicine and herbal medicine for several millennia. There are endless testimonies documenting the use of olive leaves in the Greek, Arab, Egyptian and Roman cultures, but its use has always been limited by the “terribly bitter and unpleasant” taste of the infusion of olive leaves that progressively created the disuse.

In the first half of the last century, however, there was a revival of interest in the possible therapeutic use of herbal preparations derived from the leaves of this splendid tree.

So what are the main reasons why the olive tree is considered extraordinarily or “divine”? In fact there is many, how about that the olive tree can stay without care, pesticides. etc. “Lives for millennia” and centuries-old olive trees can be eradicated, transplanted and will take root always and everywhere.

Why? Because its saps contain active substances “unique in the world” that protect it and keep it vital over time. Molecules that science is studying to offer them to the world. (tree of Life).

There are no other plants with similar characteristics. The olive tree, this miraculous pivotal plant of the Mediterranean diet, has recently been rediscovered and re-evaluated all over the world.

From the leaves of the plant, an extract can be obtained which, according to data published in the journal Phytotherapy Research, would significantly reduce LDL cholesterol and blood pressure.
