Can the use of Alfalfa improve health?

Alfalfa is an old, perennial flowering plant that is often confused with cabbage.

Alfalfa

However, it is not true. Cabbage is a cabbage family member, while Alfalfa, perchance, is not. Cabbage is simply made from cabbage plants and onions, while Alfalfa is a grass belonging to a different family. it is cultivated in numerous areas around the world.

The alfalfa plant

Alfalfa is an old, perennial flowering plant, whose roots, bulbs, and leaves are used to produce a variety of medicines. Alfalfa root is used to treat such common ailments as indigestion, sore throat, athlete’s foot, urinary tract infections, allergies, hay fever, varicose veins, jaundice, Lupus, eczema, cataracts, and dementia.

Alfalfa’s positive effects on memory seem to be particularly strong in children and teens. The chlorophyll content of the alfalfa plants makes it a powerful antioxidant. A variety of studies have shown that alfalfa sprouts contain compounds that stimulate the production of the kind of brain cells, called neurons, that are responsible for the formation of memory.

It’s use in history

In fact, the alfalfa plant has been used long ago as a kind of herbal “memory pill” or “antioxidant” for those who want to slow down the aging process. There is no evidence, however, that alfalfa sprays or pills have any effect on the diminishing function of the human brain and nervous system as we age. It is very doubtful, moreover, that taking alfalfa as a daily supplement will have any significant effect on the decreasing numbers of people with chronic disease.

Alfalfa does contain a small amount of calcium, so adding it to a diet may be somewhat helpful for osteoporosis sufferers. But the extent of the supplement’s calcium benefit is doubtful when taken alone. And people with a vitamin D deficiency may be even more seriously advised against taking any sort of supplemental vitamin D.

Can Alfalfa control cholesterol?

Alfalfa does not help much with high cholesterol or hypertension either, because of its relatively low-fat content. Some people believe that alfalfa can help control cholesterol because it contains a component that slows down the synthesis of cholesterol. That is one reason why pregnant women are sometimes advised to take alfalfa sprouts, but the advantage of the supplement is unclear. The only sure thing is that if your doctor recommends it, you should at least eat some alfalfa sprouts.

Can it lower blood sugar?

Some supplements for alfalfa contain a natural plant compound called chlorophyll, which is the same chemical compound that gives plants their green color. Chlorophyll is the main source of the sugar cellulose, which is the basis of many natural products, including health drinks, shampoos, and certain types of foods.

Some experts believe that chlorophyll is useful in helping the body use vitamin D. It may, in fact, lower blood sugar levels and could possibly prevent the onset of diabetes. A dietary supplement that contains chlorophyll-ascorbic acid was shown in some controlled studies to improve the absorption of vitamin D.

Can diabetics use Alfalfa?

So while alfalfa does provide some beneficial nutritional properties, it is probably best avoided if you are suffering from a chronic condition, such as diabetes. You should also avoid the use of any vitamin or mineral supplement containing chlorophyll. In addition, you should avoid using any topical products that contain alfalfa sprouts or any other ingredients known to increase blood cholesterol. For a healthy diet and lifestyle, it is probably better to just use alfalfa sprouts as a natural dietary supplement.
