Learning from the Brain and Mind From Near Death Experiences

What Near Death Experiences Reveal About the Brain and the Mind?

Near Death Experiences

This article will answer those questions and more. It also explores the question of consciousness beyond our physical reality. There are many elements of a near-death experience, but the proportion of people with these experiences varies greatly. Let’s look at some of the most common in turn. Ultimately, these experiences reveal much about the human brain and how it works.

Death spike

A recent study has revealed that the brain of people who have experienced near-death experiences experience a surge in activity just before and after death. This brain activity is consistent with active cognitive processing and suggests that neural explanations of near-death experiences are plausible. The study, however, did not measure baseline brain scans to confirm whether or not the spikes relate to the subjective experience.

Researchers from the University of Michigan have found that a study of cardiac arrest rats revealed that gamma band activity spiked after cardiac arrest. Interestingly, these brain activity patterns were associated with memory recall and consciousness. This cross-coupling between alpha and gamma activity is associated with cognitive processes and memory recall in healthy individuals. Thus, the findings suggest that the last’remembering of life’ in a near-death state may be related to the gamma band activity in the brain.

Out-of-body experiences

In order to understand OBEs, we first need to consider how they are experienced. According to Dr. Charles Tart, a professor of psychology at the University of California-Davis, one study involving an anonymous woman (later called Miss Z) involved placing a random number on the ceiling above the woman’s bed. Miss Z was then asked to self-induce an OBE by checking the number and reporting back to the team.

The first study examining out-of-body experiences reveals that they are common in people who suffer from a variety of diseases. In fact, up to 10% of the population experiences out-of-body experiences at least once. Various medical conditions and cultures are associated with this condition, but it remains unclear how out-of-body experiences are caused. There are few studies that have been conducted, and most occur spontaneously.

Mind/body question near death experiences

Scientists are still trying to understand how the mind/body connection works. Currently, science says that the mind is a product of the brain and subject to chemical influences. This is known as monism. However, it is not clear whether the experiences are related to the question of the mind/body. During a near-death experience, people often report enhanced mental functioning. However, their experience might be related to a brain impairment.

The first medical description of an NDE dates back to the middle ages, though some researchers believe they go even further. An 18th century French military doctor documented an experience in a paper titled Resuscitation. Research into NDEs really began in the 1970s, when psychologist Raymond A. Moody Jr. published a paper describing the experiences of two people. Moody’s work has been cited as an early example of NDE research.

Consciousness beyond our physical reality

A holistic understanding of consciousness resolves all the problems of conventional science and helps us understand our own consciousness. We are conscious of everything, including our own physical reality, but our experience is always a product of our consciousness. This is why we have absolute mastery in creating things with our minds: we can make ideas, models, societies, technology, and so on. But we cannot create consciousness. A fish does not create water, or a whirlpool a human brain.

If the structure of our physical reality is an integral part of consciousness, we may be able to observe a multitude of simultaneous experiences, including those we don’t recognize as our own. If we perceive things as a whole, then they are not simply separate but rather integrated. Consciousness, therefore, is a multi-dimensional phenomenon that can extend well beyond our physical reality. Consciousness may be the most fundamental essence of our existence.
