What Is Vaping and What Are the Effects in the Human Body?

Health care providers should remain vigilant regarding potential health risks associated with vaping.

What Is Vaping and What Are the Effects in the Human Body

Some people have developed severe lung and respiratory conditions as a result of vaping, including bronchiolitis obliterans, a condition also known as popcorn lung. These conditions, which can cause EVALI, can also affect the development of the adolescent brain.

Nicotine is addictive

One of the most common questions about the effects of nicotine addiction is whether nicotine is addictive when vaping. The answer is both yes and no. According to studies, nicotine has the ability to trigger changes in the brain that make a person crave more of it. Because the brain is still in its developmental stage until the age of 25, nicotine consumption during vaping can condition a person’s brain to become more susceptible to addiction. This is especially true for young people, whose brains are still developing.

Toxic effects of nicotine are attributed to the chemical dopamine, which affects the brain’s reward center and the emotions. Nicotine addiction causes a variety of physical symptoms, including irritability, restlessness, lack of concentration, and cravings. Nicotine is so addictive that quitting can cause worse symptoms. Nicotine can even lead to gum disease.

It can harm the adolescent brain development

Although the link between vaping and severe lung conditions is receiving a lot of attention lately, scientists are concerned about the impact that nicotine has on the developing brain of teenagers. Studies have shown that nicotine can interfere with processes crucial to memory, impulse control, and learning, which may ultimately lead to problems with attention, impulse control, and mood. And because adolescent brains are still growing, the risk is only increasing.

In adolescence, the part of the brain responsible for impulse control is not fully developed. Therefore, adolescent brains are more vulnerable to the harmful effects of psychoactive substances, and nicotine is no exception. Nicotine modulates information processing and activates nicotine receptors on different types of brain cells, which affects cognition. These effects are especially harmful to adolescent brains, which are already under pressure from other factors, including stress and addiction.

It can cause respiratory problems

Recent reports have found a link between vaping and a variety of respiratory illnesses. However, more research is needed to determine whether vaping is the actual cause of these illnesses. The CDC and FDA are currently collaborating with state and local health officials to determine whether any illnesses are related to vaping. To assist in the investigation, health-care providers should report any respiratory illness patients have experienced. To make this easier, the CDC and FDA recommend that health care professionals provide a detailed history of substances used, including the sources and devices. Health care providers should also contact their local poison control center to determine whether these products may be the culprit in the cases of respiratory illnesses.

One of the most common respiratory illnesses associated with vaping is a collapsed lung. The air in the vaping aerosol can damage the airways in the lungs, which can cause a hole in the lung. This is most commonly seen in tall, thin individuals who experienced rapid growth during their adolescence. This growth rate creates a weak point on the top of the lung. Although this condition is not usually fatal, it can be very painful and can even lead to serious respiratory problems.

It can cause EVALI

EVALI is an acute poisoning associated with vaping, and symptoms may be similar to asthma and pneumonia. However, if a person has symptoms of EVALI for a prolonged period, the condition may be a sign of an unrelated illness, such as smoking. There is a high rate of false-positive results with bronchoscopy, a diagnostic procedure used to rule out underlying diseases.

There is no cure for EVALI, but researchers are still investigating the risks. The Centers for Disease Control is investigating serious lung injuries associated with e-cigarettes and other vaping products. Case counts of EVALI in the U.S. have decreased significantly since an outbreak in the summer and fall of 2018, but new cases are expected to continue throughout 2020/22. Patients may experience shortness of breath, cough, chest pain, nausea, weight loss, and fever.

CDC reports that the number of emergency department visits related to e-cigarettes has decreased. However, the outbreak peaked in September of this year, when CDC stopped reporting it. EVALI has also been reported in states other than California, but the CDC and DHS believe that a large number of these cases are related to contaminated e-cigarette products sold in North America. The CDC has since issued a warning on e-cigarettes containing THC and Vitamin E.
