If you bother to count people who wear glasses, you will realize that they are more numerous than you think. Wearing glasses has now become commonplace. Furthermore, the models of glasses currently available are so elegant and modern that their usefulness is forgotten. We also accept with resignation that the sight drops with the passing of the years: “It’s age … nothing can be done!”.

Prevention is possible!

Scientific studies conducted over the past 15 years have clearly shown that the decrease in visual acuity can be prevented. For example, you can avoid getting tired on your eyes by spending hours in front of the television. If it is more difficult to escape the computer work, we should at least have the foresight to have a screen that does not tire the eyesight and ensure the quality of the lighting. In the long term, a varied and balanced diet also plays an essential role in maintaining visual acuity.

Macular degeneration

Macular degeneration, a vision problem due to age
Macular degeneration is, together with cataracts, the most frequent eye problem in the elderly. It involves a progressive decrease in visual acuity and can also lead to blindness. Recent clinical studies have shown that lutein and zeaxanthin, two specific carotenoids present in certain foods, such as spinach, corn, kiwis, chillies, peppers etc., are able to effectively prevent macular degeneration. These two carotenoids are also available in the form of food supplements.

Cataract

Cataract is characterized by a progressive darkening of the crystalline lens of the eye (natural lens). It is believed that among the co-responsible factors for this degenerative disease are oxidative processes, attributable to factors such as stress, smoking, alcohol abuse, the absorption of heavy metals present in the environment, UV rays etc.

Numerous studies show that vitamins C and E, as well as zinc and selenium trace elements, significantly reduce the risk of cataracts. A constant and regular supply of vitamin C or E in sufficient quantities is already enough to decrease this risk by 50-70%.
