Life is really strange! Mankind of the 21st century no longer has any respect for his body and takes the fact of being in good health for granted. Stress, smoking, alcohol, diets of all kinds are powerful contributors to food shortages. But what does it matter? After all, you will say, it is enough to take “vitamins”! Nevertheless, given the proliferation of food supplements, some clarifications should be provided.

A wide range of nutrients

Growth and maintenance of the body require regular supplies of carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, vitamins and minerals. Modern nutrition favors carbohydrates and lipids, which is why we will focus on other nutrients through some examples. Magnesium as well as calcium and potassium are necessary for heart function; 2 out of 3 people are believed to have a deficiency in this mineral. In the long term, these subjects risk suffering from cardiovascular disorders (palpitations, arrhythmias, increase in blood pressure).

The functions

The essential vitamins have very varied functions: A and D are very important during growth, while the B vitamins play a leading role in nerve transmission. Vitamin C, the best known to the general public, acts both at the endocrine and immune level, as well as being effective on fatigue and stress, as an antioxidant and cardiovascular protection factor (arteriosclerosis, excess cholesterol).
Proteins, which account for half the dry weight of cells, are omnipresent. Their constituents, amino acids, sometimes have specific functions such as arginine (immunity, detoxification) or lysine (muscle contraction).

An adequate contribution to all situations

Each deficiency causes specific symptoms. It is therefore necessary to choose the right food supplement. To avoid mental fatigue, you need to focus on vitamins B, C and magnesium, with the addition of arginine to improve intellectual performance (elimination of cerebral ammonia). This amino acid is also taken as a preventive or curative in case of immunodeficiency. People with nervousness, stress and muscle cramps need magnesium. Finally, in some cases, it is appropriate to resort to a compound containing various nutrients (vitamins, minerals, trace elements, amino acids, etc.).
